Black History Month? Let's celebrate a whole YEAR this time...

I am posting January 31st because it's ridiculous that Black History Month is February (the shortest month of the year) and i'm posting 12 months of Black history because there aren't enough days in just one month to honors all the contributions that should be honored...

I've always thought it's testament to how little things have changed that we have to refer to "black history" and "women's history", because "history" still does not encompass everyone.

Interesting calendar, it's great to voice those achievements. However I don't really believe that outrage can be had at Black History Month being in February, the shortest month. It was not a slight towards the African-American race. In actuality the honor of the month began out of the initial week of honor that was once had. The original week was picked in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abe Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Interestingly enough I've also heard cases made over the years by blacks that there should be no Black History Month. They feel it separates the achievements of the African-Americans from American History itself, and if I remember correctly it was not intended to be a permanent celebration, but instead just a way of honoring achievements until black history was actually being written about in American History books. Sorry just had to bring out the historian in me for a minute!! :)

smirking cat: I (like usually!) totally agree!

Jay: Thanks for filling us in on the actual history behind chosing Feb - i'm glad to hear it wasn't an arbitrary decision to pick the shortest month of the year :)

To me, a month is a month is a month is a month. . . and that's ALL it is. Normally 30 or 31 days, although 28 in the case of February.

Whoever got the idea of telling people what to think about in conjunction with the calendar? What's the history behind THAT movement, anyway?

"Simon says think about THIS in February! Simon says think about THAT in September!"

No. I refuse to play.

That said, I shall now return to my PDF copy of Friederich Schiller's History of the Thirty-Years War, which is my leisurely project for the month of February 2008. :)
