Civil Unions in New Hampshire!

I'm a bit late on this one but due to its importance, i wanted to share:

Via the NY Times...

New Hampshire's civil unions law - enacted by the Democrat-dominated Legislature early last year and signed by Democratic Gov. John Lynch in May, gives same sex couples the same rights, responsibilities and obligations of marriage without calling the union a marriage. New Hampshire is the fourth state in the nation to allow civil unions.

So far, civil unions are legal in Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey and now New Hampshire. Massachusetts is still the only state that allows same sex marriage.

Hopefully more states will follow suite, although my hope is they follow Massachusetts' same sex marriage laws... Oh and don't forget about all the same sex marriage bans we have to still overturn...

To leave off on a positive note:

Dozens of gay and lesbian couples entered into civil unions in New Hampshire in the early moments of New Year's Day as a new state law legalized the partnerships after midnight.

It's a good step, but why stop at calling the unions a "marriage"? If marriage was so sanctified and honored in our society, would there be so much infidelity and divorce? Heterosexuals have already stomped all over marriage, so let same-sex couples see what they can do with it. I really don't think they could do any worse.

smirking cat, well said. Also, if our country really did separate church and state then marriage wouldn't even be a big deal...

A northeastern gay marriage bloc .. great news! Setting an example for the south and the midwest (its beginning to look a lot like another civil rights movement...) I agree, though, it ought to be called marriage. Its just plain hard headed ignorance and fear. It'll take a long while before we find the antidote : (

As much as I'd love to see marriage become the norm instead o civil unions, it just seems like a far off hope. I almost wish we could just give everyone, both hetero and homosexual couples civil unions so everyone would be equal under the law, and those who wanted could go to their religious institution and then call it whatever they wanted there without the government involved.

Chris, i totally see where you're coming from. I wish that civil unions were seen as the norm, for everyone, and those who wanted a religious ceremony could just get married...

I'm so happy that New Hampshire is embracing civil unions. It actually gives me hope that Americans will continue to progress and not label homosexuality as a taboo.
