Cocaine and thinness

Does anyone read the Post Secret blog?

Many postcards they receive break my heart, this one though was especially saddening...

I love Post Secret. I question how legit some are though - is it really a forum to air your dirty little secret, or is it just a space to be as sensational as possible?

I cringed when I read that one. I think a lot of women have a "thin no matter the cost" attitude though.

This reminds me of the coverage of Britney Spears at the MTV awards. They kept saying she was "fat" even though she was thin, and thinner than 90% of American women at least.

I'm not a fan of hers because I don't like her music, but bs like that creates images of more teens with eating disorders in my head.

By the way, your poll set off a pet peeve of mine. Humanism is completely compatible with feminism, and there are plenty of feminist humanists. The way some women use the term "humanist" to avoid labeling themselves as feminist does a disservice to a wonderful, secular value system.

Libhom, i totally see your point that humanism is in fact compatible with feminism, that's why in the poll, you can select more than one response. Also, i agree that women are often scared away from labeling themselves feminists (check out my post on that: http://feministgal.blogspot.com/2007/12/im-not-feminist-but.html) especially because the lack of label minimizes activism, and really, that's what it's all about, yes?

So it's worse to do cocaine to be thin than it is to make yourself feel good?

Smirking Cat said...

Yes...snorting coke to feel good is stupid enough, but snorting coke to fit some silly female ideal for a society that doesn't treat women particularly well is incredibly stupid.

I completely agree with Smirking Cat, that YES, it is! It's far worse to do cocaine to achieve a standard of beauty than to do it for the high. Addiction sucks, i see it everyday... but most of my clients got to the point they did based on life circumstances and poor choices they made somewhere along the line. Adding this component to it, using coke to stay thin, to me that adds a whole nother element of suck to addiction.
